A Paper Presentation to the 2nd Asia Pacific Housing Forum
"Maximizing Urban Poverty Housing Solutions for Greater Results"
7-9 September 2009, Manila, Philippines

The San Carlos Integrated Rural-Urban Area Development Program is an initiative of the JF Ledesma Foundation, Inc. (JFLFI) in collaboration with key stakeholders, especially with the San Carlos Local Government Unit (LGU) to promote sustainable economic growth in the City of San Carlos. The realization that LGUs could not perpetually be dependent on the central government prompted JFLFI to initiate a development initiative to make the City become a global standard of excellence in integrated sustainable development while maintaining its rural city character. The Program aims to transform a small rural community into a modern sustainable city that is economically viable and socially responsible. It is guided by a Master Development Plan (MDP) that puts forward a practical strategy to shift attention from a traditional and historic sugar-based economy to non-conventional and sustainable industry.

Religious Pluralism for Peace & Development: The ARDEP Experience

Various ARDEP sessions with diverse pluralistic faith and international participants Various ARDEP sessions with diverse pluralistic faith and international participants

The Positivist perspective has very much shaped the Scholarship of the twentieth century. One key issue has been raised by such perspective as to the role of religion in society. There is primarily a belief that religion is a vestige of a traditional society and an impediment to social progress. As societies progress, it is believed that modernization would result to secularization wherein the normative function of religion loses its significance and beliefs on the supernatural is replaced by belief in human capability. Scholarship followed in the same vein with the positivist proposal for objectivity. There is sufficient evidence, however, that even in the modern era, religion attenuates a role that is facilitative of change in individual and societal levels. Religion, together with Ethnicity, has gained political significance in the past two decades. This stems from the very fact that religion has been a source of ethnic and collective identity, the latter of which is threatened by the homogenizing trend of globalization.
